Campaigns:
Maternity Protection Benefits

Background

In a survey conducted by AIPTF it was revealed that there exist certain discrepancies on Maternity Protection Benefits being available to women workers in different states of India especially where the number of Maternity and Paternity leave are concerned.

It was further noticed that after the amendments brought in the Maternity Protection Benefit Act (1961) following the recommendations of 6th Pay Commission in India many states have increased the maternity leave from 135 days to 180 days and have also introduced paternity leave.

On the contrary the survey also observed that a few states such as Orissa, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh etc. did not increase the maternity leave from 90 days to 180 days and paternity leave of 15 days. In some cases no paternity leave is provided.

After the implementation of VI  Pay commission by some states the, changes in maternity leave were not accepted by states namely Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Orissa, and Maharashtra .

AIPTF has launched a campaign to create awareness on these issues and in this effort AIPTF is being supported by Education International and Canadian Teachers’ Federation.
