FORMATION AND HISTORY:

Our union was initially established in 1920 under the name All Ceylon Union of Teachers (ACUT). After the take over of schools in 1961 the member teachers of government schools formed an independent union by the name All Ceylon Union of Teachers (Government) (ACUT(G)). It was formed officially on the 5th of August 1962 and was registered and the constitution was approved by the registrar of the department of labour on the 26th of November 1962. The members of the private schools formed a separate union by the name ACUT. .ACUT and ACUT(G) worked jointly for many years. Both unions were members of WCOTP until joining education International.  ACUT(G) caters to the needs of the teachers in government schools irrespective of race, religion ,or political status

MEMBERSHIP:

Any government school teacher can join the union by paying a monthly subscription of Rs.20/= or an annual subscription of Rs. 240/= ACUT(G) has a total membership of 7208 out of which 4201 are females.

BRANCHES:

We have 14 branches in 14 districts.-Colombo, Gampaha, kurunegala,
Galle,Matara, Hambantota,Kalutara Ratnapura,Kandy,Matale,Anuradhapura,Kegalle, Puttalam and Ampare.

The Executive Committee consists of 33 members and currently we have 18 (over 50%). women committee members.

VISION:
To build up thepersonality of the members to face the challenging and changing world trend in education field

MISSION:
To prepare teacher with a balanced personality and to uplift teacher service protecting their rights skills. Teacher to teach in a comfortable enviourmet protection and help from educational authorities to serve the student for quality education

OBJECTIVES:

1. Unionize and unite the teachers of government schools in Sri Lanka.
2. Improve the standard of education in Sri Lanka.
3.Increase the participation of teachers in union activities and give awareness in Trade Union Rights.
4. Build up confidence and upgrade the standard of the teaching profession.
5. Help the teachers in Educational Reaserch.
6. Solve problems faced by teachers.
7. Solve problems related to appointments, promotions, transfers, salaries and leave.

ACTIVITIES:

* Conducting seminars and participating in seminars on Educational Reforms, Quality Education, Rights and Responsibilities of teachers and achieving Education for All.
* Publish journals, bulletins, broachers, periodicals and newsletters.
*Conduct and participate in events of global interest such as International Woman’s Day, Global Action Week, World Teachers Day and World Children’s Day.
*Conducting, involving and working together with other like minded unions and organizations on social issues concerning women and children such as National drug policy, Poverty elevation, Violence and sexual abuse against women and children, Trafficking and abuse against migrant domestic workers and  local domestic workers, HIV/AIDS.
*Fund raising act ivies,
*Humanitarian aid during natural disasters.

ACHIEVEMENTS:


Susscessfully completed a large housins scheme for members.

Fought for Sri Lanka teacher service for Sri Lankan teachers with cooperation with other unions

Monthly meeting with the higher Educationa authorities  to discuss about cuurent problems.

Obtain paternatiy leave fo male teachers

Traning members to develop their leadershipqualities

Fulltime member is released for our union works
